Alan Geyer

Alan Geyer encourages all of his students to seek out the music that they love.  He shows how a student’s musical interests make sense in the context of learning how to play piano, and how the fundamentals of music are practically universal.  Once a student begins to hear and understand the similarity between Bach’s Minuet in G and a song by Pink Floyd, Lady Gaga, or Nina Simone, something special happens.  Discovering insights that make the process come alive is what sustains the enjoyment of learning how to play any instrument, and is what makes lessons fun.

Alan holds a B.I.S. in Piano Performance, Philosophy, and Literature from Georgia State University, magna cum laude, where he studied piano with Brandt Fredriksen and composition with Robert Thompson. As a student there he performed in numerous venues, most notably the Gasteig in Munich and the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, and played keyboard in an Atlanta metal band.  Alan went on to earn a Master's in Engaged Humanities with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he focused on the intersection of music, the psyche, and aesthetics.  He continued his studies at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, where he earned his Master's in Liberal Arts.  He then composed full-time for several years while he studied with both José-Luis Hurtado of UNM and Justin Dello Joio of Juilliard.

Alan’s broad education in the humanities informs every aspect of his approach to music.  He is interested in just about everything, and can therefore connect with a body of students who have a wide range of interests.  Since 2007, Alan has taught dozens of students from the ages of five to seventy-seven.
