Become a real DJ. In this class, you’ll learn to spin real vinyl records on turntables. Get acquainted with one of the world’s newest instruments as you see how DJs create modern genres from hip hop to electronica. Learn about beat-matching, mixing, scratching and much more!

Program Details

Middle School ensembles are for students who are entering or currently attending 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. High School ensembles are for students who are entering or currently attending 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th great. Recommended minimum experience is either two years of private instruction or two years of playing with a school ensemble. There is a questionnaire on our registration form that will ask for each student’s age and musical experience so that we can organize ensembles with students of similar backgrounds.



		

Pricing

$299.00 per student. We have a variety of scholarships and discounts available. If you’re interested in an ensemble, but affordability is an issue, EMAIL US. We are committed to making our programs affordable for everyone to the best of our ability. Discounts are offered periodically throughout the spring. Scholarships are based on need. Turntables Workshop is run subject to a minimum enrollment of three students. If this program doesn’t work with your schedule, just give us a call. We’d be happy to look into adding more!

About The Instructor

Killian Karlsson has been a professional educator, session player, and nationally touring musician for the past 8 years. Since attending Berklee College of Music, he has played with many great artists including Alan Evans (Soulive, Play On Brother), Beau Sasser (Z3, Play On Brother, Melvin Sparks), DarbyWolf (Rubblebucket), and Miro Sprague (Thelonious Monk Institute Graduate) among others.  ::READ MORE::

Required Materials

The Art of Turntable Technique is required for all of our turntable workshops.  The book is $27 is available here at the school.  There is no need to get a copy in advance.  We will have one available for every student on the first day of the workshop.
Book includes: photographs and musical exercises, tips on how the pros set up their gear for scratch mixing, and a history of DJing and hip-hop culture, plus interviews with top DJs such as: DJ Swamp (Beck), MixMaster Mike (Beastie Boys), DJ QBert (Invisibl Skratch Picklz), DJ Kuttin Kandi (5th Platoon/Anomolies), DJ A-Trak (Teenage DMC/ITF World Champion), and DJ Craze (three-time DMC World Champion). The companion records (two 7 EPs) provide scorching grooves, phat beats, and wicked scratch material for DJs/turntablists of any level.
